How To Spend A Weekend In Western Colorado

Western Colorado is a beautiful and diverse region with many outdoor activities, natural wonders, and cultural attractions. Here's one possible itinerary for your weekend trip to Western Colorado:

Day One: 

  1. Morning: Start the day with a scenic drive to Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, located just 15 miles east of Montrose. Explore the park’s rim and take in the stunning views of the deep and narrow Black Canyon.

  2. Afternoon: Drive to Ridgway State Park, located about 30 minutes south of Montrose. Spend the afternoon hiking, fishing, or simply relaxing by the reservoir.

  3. Evening: Head to the charming mountain town of Ouray, just a short drive from Ridgway. Enjoy dinner at one of the local restaurants such as Full Tilt Saloon or Brickhouse 737 soak in the hot springs, or take a stroll through the historic downtown area.

Day Two:

  1. Morning: Start the day with a scenic drive to Telluride, a famous ski resort town with a vibrant culture, unique shops and restaurants, and numerous outdoor activities such as hiking, skiing, and mountain biking.

  2. Afternoon: Take the free gondola from Telluride to Mountain Village, and enjoy lunch or a snack with a view of the San Juan Mountains.

  3. Evening: Drive back to Montrose and enjoy dinner at one of the local restaurants, such as the Stone House or Ted Nelson’s Steakhouse.

Day Three:

  1. Morning: Head to the Grand Mesa National Forest, located about an hour east of Montrose. Explore the forest’s scenic vistas, hiking trails, and fishing opportunities.

  2. Afternoon: Visit the nearby town of Cedaredge, known for its abundant orchards and vineyards. Take a tour of one of the local wineries such as Stoney Mesa Winery, or pick up some fresh produce at one of the local farm stands.

  3. Evening: End the weekend by grabbing dinner at a local restaurant in Delta, such as Daveto’s Italian Restaurant, before heading back to Montrose.
