The Campers Hub

Montrose, Colorado is located in an ideal location for exploring the surrounding area, especially the San Juans, which is no surprise why we chose to build a campground right in the heart of it all!

There are so many places to explore that it can be hard to choose what to do each day, so we decided we would help you out and compile a list of some of the top day trips from our campground here in Montrose!

One of the most popular day trips from Montrose is a drive to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. The park is only 15 miles east of Montrose and features stunning views of the deep and narrow Black Canyon.  There are plenty of things to do while visiting the park such as hiking, fishing, and camping. Check all the guidelines and regulations before participating in these activities as some may require permits.

We have found that a lot of our guests will plan to visit Black Canyon of the Gunnison for two days during their stay in Montrose, while this isn’t a bad idea, depending on the activities you are planning to do there we often suggest visiting Ouray one of the days if it isn’t already in their plans. Ouray is known as the “Switzerland of America” due to the city being surrounded by steep jagged mountains in every direction. Ouray is a charming mountain town just 45 minutes south of Montrose, with fun for the whole family to enjoy. From hiking trails to hot springs to historic sites to cute bars and restaurants, there is no lack of activities when visiting this beautiful destination!

Telluride is a great day trip that is about an hour and 30 minutes drive through a scenic route south of Montrose. Telluride is known internationally as a famous ski resort town, but there is a lot more than skiing to do when visiting this vibrant city! From unique shops and restaurants to numerous outdoor activities such as skiing, hiking, and mountain biking there is something for everyone in the family to enjoy!

Ridgway State Park is another great day trip that is only 15 to 20 minutes south of Montrose.  Ridgway State Park offers several outdoor activities to enjoy such as hiking trails, camping, paddle boarding, boating, swimming, hiking, and simply enjoying the beautiful reservoir.

Grand Mesa National Forest is a bit of a further drive, but worth it!  The vast forest is located about an hour and a half northeast of Montrose and offers stunning views, hiking trails, fishing, and camping. We did a hike up to Craig’s Crest and it was stunning with 360-degree views! Always be sure to check the weather and hit the trails early as storms generally move into the area in the early afternoon.

Gunnison National Forest offers an array of diverse recreational opportunities, such as camping, fishing, hunting, hiking, and horseback riding. It is located about an hour and a half east of Montrose making it a great location for a day trip when the Montrose temperatures are high.
