Montrose itself may not have a ski resort, but it makes a great basecamp to visit ski resorts surrounding the area!
Powderhorn Mountain Resort: This ski resort is the closest to Montrose, located about 45 miles east of the city. Powderhorn is a family-friendly ski resort that offers over 1,600 acres of skiable terrain, 70% of which is beginner/intermediate runs. While the majority of the runs are designed for beginners and intermediate skill levels, there are some advanced runs as well. Powderhorn also has a great ski school for children or for those who are looking to get an instructor to brush up on their skills. Not only is this ski resort for all levels of skiers, but it is also a great spot for snowboarders to enjoy!
Telluride Ski Resort: Recognized internationally as one of the best skiing and snowboarding destinations, Telluride Ski Resort offers 2,000 acres of skiable terrain, including groomed runs, moguls, and backcountry areas. Telluride offers runs for beginners, intermediate, and advanced skiiers and snowboarders.
Located about 65 miles southwest of Montrose, Telluride is also known for its charming historic town with great dining and shopping options – making it a great destination for those who ski or those who would rather spend the day exploring the town!
3. Crested Butte Mountain Resort: Located about 90 miles northeast of Montrose, Crested Butte is a beautiful mountain destination no matter what time of year you decide to visit. Its charming ski resort offers over 1,500 acres of skiable terrain, including wide-open groomers, tree skiing, and challenging steeps – this is a great destination for those who are thrill-seeking skiers. This resort offers some of the steepest and most extreme terrains, drawing in people from all over the world. Crested Butte also has a vibrant downtown area with great restaurants and nightlife, so there is more fun to be had after a long day on the slopes!
4. Kendall Mountain Ski Area: Located about 50 miles northeast of Montrose, in Silverton, Kendall Mountain is a small, local ski area that offers beginner and intermediate runs. It is a great option for families and those looking for a low-key skiing experience.
Even though Montrose is not known as a skiing destination, there are a variety of skiing and snowboarding options for all skill levels that are easily accessible from Montrose. As always, when traveling anywhere in Colorado during the winter season, be sure to check weather conditions ahead of time. Snowstorms can move in quickly, especially at the higher elevations!
